S L Bailey and P Godfrey-Faussett (Aug 28, p 683)1 express concern that the important links between tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases were not addressed in the recent Series on tuberculosis. They overlook that the first paper in the Series2 reviews the effect of diabetes, alcohol abuse, smoking, and undernutrition on risk of developing tuberculosis and risk of adverse tuberculosis treatment outcome, and includes estimates of their related population-attributable fractions.

Bailey and Godfrey-Faussett rightly point to the importance of these links for policy development and implementation. As discussed in our paper, the links between tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases have major potential policy implications.
