To the Editor: Lemanske et al. (March 18 issue)1 report on the Best Add-on Therapy Giving Effective Responses (BADGER) trial (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00395304 [ClinicalTrials.gov] ), which assessed the response to step-up therapy in children with mild-to-moderate, uncontrolled asthma.
Although higher scores on the Asthma Control Test, which indicate better disease control, predicted a greater likelihood of a favorable response to long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) step-up, it is intriguing to see that LABAs and leukotriene-receptor antagonists (LTRAs) did not differ significantly in patients with Asthma Control Test scores of 19 or lower (i.e., worse disease control).
