An educational seminar on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for the primary care physician was held successfully on October 16, 2005 in the Miramar Hotel, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon.

This special educational seminar, entitled “Release patients from the burden of COPD”, was co-organized by the Hong Kong Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians (Hong Kong & Macau Chapter), and forms part of the endeavour of the two societies to promote World COPD day and aims to update knowledge among health care professional of various facets of the disease.

The seminar was delivered by a panel of local experts. Topics covered included the definition and epidemiology of COPD, interpretation of lung function test, investigation and diagnosis of COPD, treatment strategy and application of spirometry in the primary care clinic.

Demonstration of performance of spirometry provided hand-on experience to participants and this practical part of the seminar was very well received.
